Bad effects from running?

As i was looking at other questions about running, i saw that it running can later cause knee/join problems and other problems later on.My age is 16 and i love running. One of my goals is to participate and finish in a marathon, one of my impossible goals was to be in the olympics or atleast make it on the team, but yeah i know its not going to happen....But yet the thought of ruining my knees and getting joint problems is what worries me and stops me from achieving some of my goals.

Am I worrying too much or am i on the same level of this "worry-ness" as i should be about knees/joints problems?Help!

  1. I used to run alot when i was 16 and now im 19 but i always had knee problems.. now i cant even walk for a long time without almost dying of pain...but i bought these things for my shoes that are supposed to help with the knee pain and i don't feel a thing anymore..

And its not impossible for you to get into the Olympics, just keep training, and don't give up... i wish i was in the Olympics too, for cycling and i have no support from my parents or friends since they think its just another dream of mine that i will just give up, so that pisses me off and i want to prove them wrong.. So just buy those things for your shoes(i dont remember the name lol) and go running, and i'll see you in the London Olympics.. lol.

  2. Don't stop running keep going! It's only hard on the joints when you get old since they can't handle as much. Never, Never give up! If you keep training really hard then you can make it to the olympics. One of the best things you can do is visualize yourself going to the olympics.

  3. It's a common misconception.  All kinds of things can lead to injury.  Consider Deena, she injured her foot tripping over a pine cone.  You could step the wrong way off a curb and mess yourself up so much that you could no longer run.  May as well do what you enjoy, life is unpredictable and you should make the most of it.

"This is according to a Stanford University study published yesterday, says Reuters.com, "showing that middle-aged members of a runner's club were half as likely to die over a 20-year period as people who did not run."

Researchers say that running cut the risk of heart disease, cancer, and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, and just plumb kept folks alive longer:

"At 19 years, 15 percent of runners had died compared with 34 percent of controls," Dr. Eliza Chakravarty and colleagues wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

In fairness, the researchers didn't cite running, specifically, as a magic bullet:

"Both common sense and background science support the idea that there is nothing magical about running per se," Fries said in a telephone interview. "It is the regular physical vigorous activity that is important."

On the other hand, runners did spend more total time exercising than others in the study, and they kept at it as they aged. (And if running isn't magical, they forgot to tell this guy.)

The cherry on top? It's gotta be this finding, which we encourage you to print out, laminate, and carry in your wallet, to show your neighbors next time they warn you about your joints:

The study also showed that people cannot use the risk of injury as an excuse not to run -- the runners had fewer injuries of all kinds, including to their knees.

Who knows? Your neighbor might just put down that bucket of chicken and join you in a jog around the block."

I think you should enjoy your miles :)

  4. Drink milk (im 16 also) My coach told me that it is best to run a Full marathon when your body stops developing so i'll wait till my 20's for now i'll stick to 1/2 marathons

One of my coaches also told me " Its better to aim for a STAR and miss by a mile then to hit a skunk right in the face" the star and skunk being Goals

I'm watching the Olympics and that motivates me, i might not get there but I'll be so much better trying

Take care of your body and stay off the pavement as much as you can, i know a guy who is in his 70's and can run pretty fast and he has been running since our age

  5. ohhhh omg im so sorry bu in two weeks your going to die im a docter im sosososso sorry

  6. don;t worry about what if  as it may not even happen as i  am 35 and been running since i was 10 and had no serious problems and im at the top of my game

  7. running does not cause knee and joint pain later on..I dont know who told you that BS

The marathon is a good goal

The olympics arent...Everyone you see competing is on drugs....ALL OF THEM

  8. Just make sure you have a proper and enough warm-ups before you run.

  9. well just get really good running shoes every 4 month or 6 depends how much you run that will prevent you from damages.A good diet and always warm-up and strch before practice. You also have to stretch after practice.
