Bad experience with contact lesnses. Are they safe?

I recently started wearing contacts. A few days ago I had them in and I noticed that my right contact had fallen out or moved because the vision in my right eye suddenly became blurry. But I didnt feel or notice that it actually dropped out. I went to the closest bathroom looked around for it for a long time but couldn't find it so i assumed it had fallen out. Later that night I found out I was wrong. Just before I went to bed i poked around my upper eye lid and to my surprise i saw the contact folded up underneath my upper eye lid ... way back in there! I pulled out it out but needless to say by this point my eye was all red and irritated.

Considering I almost went to sleep with this thing stuck in my eye, im very concered about the safety of wearing contacts. Am I overreacting? Are contact lenses safe in the long-run?

Also i have alot of problems pulling them out. Any tips would be appreciated.

  1. completely safe!

  2. Haha I was just like you when I got mine. Ok I got mine when I was 12. Trust me I've been there and did that, I've slept with them, got them knocked out by playing sports, suddenly vanish out of my eye, got stuck up in my eye put the wrong solution and made my eyes burn for hours, and in the end I turned out fine haha. For pulling them out it's just like putting them in; open your eye wide, and then just like taking a pinch of salt out of a bowl take them out of your eye with your index  and thumb (thats how you pinch something). You'll be fine.

  3. I've been wearing contacts for over a year now and have had no problems. Taking them out and putting them in just takes practice so don't worry if you are having problems. It's natural to find it hard to poke around your eyes.

If you are trying to take them out slide your thumb on your lower eyelid and use it to hold it open. Now slowly slide your index finger across the surface of your eye and pinch the contact lens and it will come right off.

Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before and after and that you store it carefully so it remains clean and doesn't tear.

  4. Contact lenses are safe, I think the biggest problem with your lenses folding up is they weren't put in like they were supposed to so it didn't stick to the eye.  Try putting the contact in, then lift up the upper eye lid and put it down over the contact and press down lightly to secure it.  That always helps with my contacts.

  5. hmmm i'm pretty sure they're safe.  It got up there in your eye but i doubt they could get lost there or go floating around in your brain or anything (nowhere else to go besides around your eye!)

i had them when I was ten and now i'm 18 and going to get them again.  to take them out I touched it on my eye and slid it to the inside corner of my eye, there it got folded so i just picked it out.    if you don't like them, you can just wear glasses.  glasses are 4000 times easier.

  6. if that happens a lot, I would have your eye doctor check the fit of the lenses. It does happen, especially with a new lens wearer.

  7. You may have placed the lens on your eye 'in side out'.  If placed in the eye the wrong way they tend to fold like a taco shell and end up under your eyelid.  Go back to your eye doctor and have someone take a few minutes to demonstrate the proper way to put in the lenses.  Really good instructions can mean the difference between easily wearing contacts and going back to glasses.

  8. I definately know what you mean - the EXACT same thing happened to me a couple times when I first started wearing contacts.

I've been wearing them for almost 7 years now, and trust me, once you get more comfortable with your lenses and get really used to having them, you'll absolutly LOVE them, and that weird **** stops happening.

The thing is, when you first wear them you feel a little more nervous, you blink more, and you blink a little harder.

My best advice for using them is:

To put them in, make sure they're in the proper direction. Check by placing the lense in the crease of your palm, the fold slowly - if it sticks and lays flat to your hand, its inside out.  If it folds in like a taco, its in the right direction.

Next, gently pull your upper lid while looking DOWN, then look UP and pull the lower lid down.  Keep looking up, place the lense in, and blink and look forward.  In time, once you get used to the contacts, you'll be able to look right at the lense on your finger.

To take them out, look up, gently pull down on the lense.

    Hope this helps :)
