Question:

Bad fan to blame for hot wire shortage?

While updating my wall switches, something went wrong and my fan died (blades spun then I switched the light switches and whole thing died). I have two, 3-set of switches in my room. The first set (I believe gets power from the breaker) all the switches work, except the fan's switch. The second set nothing works. I believe the second set is recieving power through the fan.

I have tested the other light fixtures using a voltmeter and they are wired correctly, it can detect 120w power but no lights turn on. I accidently touched the hot wire in this non-working set and I didn't get shocked. All swiches and bulbs are confirmed good.

Do you think my bad fan is to blame? How can I test this? If I replace the fan and it still doesn't work, whats the cause? I have tried everything but replacing the fan. Could my polarity be reversed? I don't want to hook up a new fan and ruin it too.

Please give me your opinion and how to fix my problem.

  1. this is what i want to know test all threw the switch box see if there are two feeds that equal 220-240v

that could explain the burn out

make sure you test the wires and not the switches.

then do not go by the colors of the wires because you might had an fool in there before you

test each wire above the fan with each switch on then off

one at a time this should give you a clear picture of the

true ckt(circuit) if you still have problems add more details

    and we'll work it out

  2. There is no polarity in AC (but code says black is hot).Could you try to explain your problem a little more clearly.Did you replace the switch with the same type??
