Bad light stops Children's Miracle Network Classic 2010 first round
Darkness brought the Children's Miracle Network Classic to halt in the first round.
The tournament was in process at the Magnolia and Palm Golf Club near Lake Buena Vista, Florida when darkness descended on the par-72 course and forced the organizers to break in between the schedule.
Most of the field completed the round, whereas, 14 players were stuck in the pipeline waiting for the next day to begin. The event, which falls under the PGA tour, comes to the same venue every year to mark the season close. Complementing its field, the
sponsors have kept the purse sky high so that a maximum number of golfers take part.
28-year-old Chris Stroud smashed a round of 62 to get closer to the prize money of $4,700,000 in the first round that took place on 11th November. The American picked up ten birdies in fog prevalent conditions. With 77.8% of Green Hits in Regulation,
the player wrapped up the field, while, others were redefining their strategies to tackle the course.
Three strokes behind was Ronald Thatcher with seven-under-par in his basket. The 33-year-old picked up six birdies, one eagle against a bogey on the 7010 yards course. Thatcher missed a shot at the par-5 14th hole, when he was aiming for a birdie
putt and the ball crossed the pin to settle three feet away.
He was followed by a group of five players at 6-under-par. The group included Ryder Cup member Rickie Fowler, Brenden Pappas, Jerry Kelly, Cameron Percy and Tim Herron.
The 21-year-old Californian (Rickie Fowler) managed a superb play with three birdies in the first round and five in the next. However, he dropped two shots at the 12th and 16th, owing to the strong fog that created a great resistance
in the game.
The man who conquered the Pebbles Beach in 2009, Stewart Cink, seemed tense on the tees. The fog became denser towards the evening. Cink managed two birdies in the front nine, but gave them away with missed shots. However, he tried catching up with the leader
in the back nine, but could only get away with a single birdie and settled with a score of one-under-par.
