China’s badminton queen Wang Shixian was expected to claim Women’s Singles trophy in 2012 BWF Superseries Finals but it seems bad luck proved the biggest hurdle for her in this race to glory.
Though, World Number five shuttler gained access to the title match but an ill-timed injury forced her to concede walk over. This woeful incident hit her very badly as she was looking to end a long streak of failures in season’s last Superseries event.
The Chinese campaigner’s last international title was 2012 Korea Open where she raised Women’s Singles trophy but then she could not live up to the expectations in prestigious tournaments like All England Open, Swiss Open, Badminton Asia Championships, Denmark
Open, Li Ning China Open and Hong Kong Open.
The 2012 edition of BWF Superseries Finals was the biggest hope to regain her status in the arena and she raised her chances of success with an unbeatable run in preliminary stages. Wang Shixian stamped big guns like Sung Ji Hyun, Ratchanok Intanon and Eriko
Hirose in her way to final round.
However, she did not have a dream start as World Number two Li Xuerui thrashed her straight away in the opening match. Both compatriot players remained head-to-head for more than one hour and this crucial match ended with final figures of 21-19, 15-21 and
21-18.
Wang Shixian did not lose heart after this loss and ensured her presence in the tournament by claiming a straight-set victory in very next encounter.
She was up against the Korean shuttler Ji Hyun and this meeting proved real test for her. She played with an authoritaive approach throughout this battle and kept her opponent grounded.
The Chinese campaigner played with great control and wrapped this showdown with a favourable result of 21-19 and 21-19. This splendid win setup her next clash with Eriko Hirose of Japan.
Both contenders challenged each other in all areas of game and made this a memorable contest. Wang Shixian displayed unbeatable craft on court and lock the honour with a 2-1 victory.
With such an impressive performance, she earned right to be in the semi-final round of this esteemed tournament. She was scheduled to meet the Thai campaigner Ratchanok Intanon and this crucial match proved a one-sided affair.
Now Wang Shixian was in high spirit to claim an avenging victory over Li Xuerui in the title match.
However, an ill-timed injury put her expedition to halt. First sign of trouble came when she could not move swiftly across the court and lost first set. Next game doubled the trouble and she had to leave the court in a woeful manner.
Though, Wang Shixian could not end this season in a desired fashion but still her impressive run in 2012 BWF Superseries Finals fetched great deal of admiration and respect for her.
