Bad news for Tottenham Hotspur as Luis Fabiano extends contract with Sevilla
Luis Fabiano has officially put pen to paper and agreed a two-year extension on his current contract with Spanish La Liga side Sevilla.
The Brazilian international, whose previous deal was set to run out in June of next year, had regularly been the subject of transfer speculation. He has, however, decided to put aside all those speculations and commit his future to the Spanish outfit.
The twenty-nine-year old joined Sevilla in 2005 from Portuguese side FC Porto. He has been one of the most prolific goal scorers in Spain over the last five years ever since he arrived at the club. He has helped Sevilla win two UEFA Cups, two Copa del Reys and both the European and Spanish Super Cups.
Fabiano was, however, heavily linked with a move to Tottenham this summer.
The player, who has scored ninety-five goals in all games for Sevilla, was reported to have said earlier today, "It's a very happy day. This is my home, I've been here six seasons and I will try to continue scoring goals and continue making history for Sevilla. It's a very special day for me.
"My first option was to renew with Sevilla. I rejected many offers and there were many interested teams. My desire was always to be here and what's true is that we have made a great effort to renew the contract."
He added: "Sevilla have given me everything. When I arrived here the fans didn't think much of Luis Fabiano, because at my two previous teams in Europe (Porto and Rennes) things didn't go well.
"But here I've returned to the national team, I've won many titles...I owe a lot to Sevilla, that's the truth."
This news will act as a major boost to Sevilla’s campaign this coming season, after the team suffered a huge blow when they were knocked out of the Champions League by Portuguese side Braga in the Champions League play-offs.
The team also lost out in the Spanish Super Cup to Barcelona last week; this was despite the fact that the team was leading the tie three goals to one going into the game. The team will now be playing in the Europa League this season. They were placed in Group J which contains teams such as Paris St Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Karpaty Lviv.
Sevilla managed to bounce back in spectacular fashion in the opening game of the season against newly promoted side Levante. The team went on to win the La Liga game by a score-line of four goals to one on Saturday.
Looking forward to the coming season and the challenges at hand, Luis Fabiano said on Sevilla’s official website: "My first objective is to continue scoring goals and after be in the Champions League next season and win a title, which is very nice."
The fans of the team will be hoping that their prized asset continues to perform the way he has been so far, so that the team has a shot at some silverware this coming season.
