Bad start for Lee Westwood at the Lytham
Golfers from all over the world are at this auspicious event to fight for the oldest and the most prestigious golf trophy, the Claret Jug. This is the 141st British Championship Open and the venue for this event is the Royal Lytham & St Annes
Golf Course.
In the event, some players have been successful in giving a good performance, while others have failed to do so. One player who has not been able to live up to his game is Lee Westwood. He finished the first day at Lytham in 73 shots.
Westwood had a good start to the round one. He was able to bag two birdies on the first two holes. Immediately after that, he scored a double bogey on the third hole. His front nine included two more birdies on the seventh and ninth hole and a bogey on the
sixth hole.
His score after the front nine was one-under par. He had a decent enough score on the front nine. Unfortunately for the 39 year old, he had a worse score on the back nine.
Westwood started off his back nine with three consecutive pars, which were followed by two bogeys on the thirteen and fourteenth hole. After another par on the fifteenth, he carded two more bogeys on the sixteenth and seventeenth hole.
His score on the back nine was four-over par. As a result, his total score after the first day climbed up to three-over par. He was tied at the ninety ninth spot with 13 other players.
The English professional golfer after the round one in an interview said, “The start was a bit of a lie, really. I don't feel in control of the ball and you get found out pretty quickly”.
“I've been working on it for three or four weeks now, since the US Open. I didn't hit it that great there; I got away with a lot. It's just one of those things, you can't have great form all the time,” he added.
It is needless to say that Lee Westwood is disappointed with his first round performance. He is nine strokes behind the leader, Scott Adam and will have to play some extraordinary golf in the next three days to get a good position in the tournament.
