Bad times waiting ahead for Martin Whitmarsh
David Coulthard believes that the man under the most pressure at this moment is the McLaren team boss, Martin Whitmarsh. According to the former McLaren driver, the team would not be able to get the
Drivers title as well; thus, ending another season without success.
The Constructors’ Championship has already been wrapped up by the Red Bull Racing at the last weekend’s race in Brazil, while the Drivers title also seems very unlikely for the British squad now.
McLaren have not won the Constructors' Championship since 1998, and despite having strong hopes of winning it again this season, all their efforts went in vain. After having started a promising season with two World Champions,
Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, the team got badly hit by hard luck at the last and the final stage of the season.
The season started brilliantly for the team, as they were able to bag victory at four of the first eight races, which also included three 1-2 finishes. However, the early developments of Red Bull and the roaring come back of Ferrari
halted their dominance over the charts and now they stand at the verge of losing the second title as well.
The McLaren driver and championship defender, Jenson Button is already out of the battle whereas the 24 points difference of Lewis Hamilton has shrank his hopes as well.
While talking to the media earlier today the team boss, Whitmarsh admitted that their laid-back development work has cost them both the championships. He explained saying, "we have had a few mistakes and we have not developed the
car quickly enough. But we will keep pushing and we will see what we can do at the next race".
Despite the team’s vows of a tough battle at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, this Sunday, Coulthard says that there are hardly any chances for the team to lay its hands on the title. He further continued telling that Whitmarsh is under
immense ‘fire’ now. The Briton took the principalship from Ron Dennis last year and had not been able to bring home any title in these two seasons.
Moreover, Coulthard concluded saying, 'I have heard a few people mention, erroneously in my opinion, that team principal Martin Whitmarsh is a man under pressure but as far as I know he does not design or drive the car. Sure, as
captain of the ship Martin must shoulder his share of the responsibility. And I know that after taking over from Ron Dennis at the start of last season he is desperate for some success in his own name.”
