Question:

Bad to wear contacts to long?

I was due for my new contacts.

I'm supposed to only wear these for 1 month(take out every day)

But I've had them for 45 days. Theres no tear on them and they still feel fine on my eyes.

I gotta go to the beach tomarrow for a week and my eye doctor hadn't gotten my contacts in yet.

Will it hurt me if I wear my current ones for 1 more week?

  1. Mmmm-this is a tough one.

I think if you clean them well, you might be able to get away with it, but if I were you, I'd wear backup glasses as much as possible.

  2. make sure that you clean them very well and make sure that you are taking them out every night, if you wear them too long there can be some problems but since there's not much you can do just take care of them. next time call to order before your month is up.

  3. It's entirely possible that you could wear those contacts for 5 months and not have a problem, however, one of the problems with wearing contacts too long is they begin to get calcium deposits on the which can give you spotty or blurry vision.

However, the biggest risk is it greatly increases the risk of an eye infection. There may be little pockets of bacteria that will grow bigger and can cause eye infections. Eye infections are extremely serious and if you ever think you have developed one see an eye professional immediately.

  4. Monthly contact lenses are designed to be disposed of 30 days after the sterile packaging is opened period.  The materials that they are made of start to break down after this period of time, what this means to you is that the permiability of the lens is reduced.

This means that there is less oxygen getting through to your eye: you run the risk of a condition of neurovascularisation.  This is where your eye is so starved of oxygen that new veins grow over your cornea to try and absorb more oxygen into your eye.  THIS CONDITION IS IRREVERSIBLE, once you have it you will always see veins in your vision!!!!

If you must wear these contact lenses, wear them for as short a time as posible.

You should always order your lenses about 3 weeks before you need them, better to be safe than sorry.

  5. You should ask your doctor what he advises you to do. When protein deposits build up on a lense, it can irritate your eyelids. (I had it, no fun.)  I guess my eyes make a lot of protein and it deposited on my lenses and built up there. 15 days longer and even longer than that - I would be uncomfortable with that. But that's me with my protein deposits problem.  It depends on your eyes.. Doesn't he have lenses he can lend you?  Or lenses that he could substitute for you until yours come in.  Could you get a substitute lense from another doctor??    Take good care of your eyes, you only have one pair for life.

  6. Those are disposables. I wore mine a long time, even when I got  the ones I ordered. I took care of them and they're still good. I haven't thrown them away, because I'm going to use them in case my soft contacts ruin, for backup.
