Bad weather disrupts Sicilian Open; fourth round spills over into Monday with Raphael Jacquelin leading
Nature proved to be a challenge for the tournament committee of Sicilian Open, as the final day had to be abandoned late in the afternoon. Weather conditions were not suitable for completing the final round on Sunday which has been extended to Monday.
Frenchman Raphaël Jacquelin maintained his lead and will be completing his final round today. The 36-year old from France only managed to complete his first twelve holes and is the clubhouse leader. He had three birdies in his first nine holes and a single
bogey on the long par-5, 12th. His approach shot to the green was wayward and failed to even make a par. It might turn out to be a costly bogey for him, as he leads the tournament by a margin of one stroke only.
Jacquelin said, “It was a little bit frustrating to bogey the 12th before we finished there but it was actually a good bogey so I can’t have too many complaints. I am two under for the round and have a one shot lead so we will come back and do it all again
in the morning. I played well though and holed more putts today even though it was difficult to get the pace of the greens because of the weather.”
Jacquelin has played well throughout the four days and managed to card under-par rounds. He is followed by England’s Anthony Wall who is a single shot behind the clubhouse leader.
Wall also managed to complete just twelve holes; he had three birdies and a single bogey on his card. The only drop shot came on the par-4, 9th where his tee shot missed the fairway by a great margin. The Englishman is confident of making a move
in the final six holes to curb the challenge of Rahpael and lift the trophy.
Jacquelin is confident of maintaining his lead today to mark his third European Tour victory. He last won a title four years back and is hoping to end his title drought, whereas Wall is also looking for his second title in eleven years.
The Spaniard Jose Manuel Lara was through to fifteen holes as he heard the siren and had to return to the clubhouse. He had five birdies and a single bogey on his card. The 33-year old was looking in great shape and trails by just two strokes over the clubhouse
leader.
Lara was looking confident after making three consecutive birdies in the first nine holes. He was rather disappointed with the weather conditions and is hoping to finish the remaining holes with a few birdies on his score card.
A few players on the field still managed to complete their final round.
A close contest is expected between the two top players on the leader board as they complete their round today.
