Badminton Asia Championships: Cheng Shao powers her way to quarter-finals
The Women’s Singles shuttler Cheng Shao Chieh of Chinese Taipei trod into quarter-finals of Badminton Asia Championships after stamping Wang Lin of China in second round match on April 19, 2012.
Cheng Shao had to sweat hard for 49 minutes to put final figures of 16-21, 21-18 and 21-11.
World Number nine shuttler displayed her elevated craft on the court throughout three exhausting sets and put a halt to spirited Wang’s expedition.
In opening game of the match, the talented Chinese campaigner played amazing badminton and bagged first match point by returning from a notable deficit.
Wang Lin kept trailing behind her higher ranked rival in most part of the game but she struck hard when it mattered.
The Taipei lady gained a respectable lead in the beginning with 7-3 margin and managed to continue with her lead until the break was announced at 11-7 score position.
After the break, Cheng Shao committed some fatal mistakes which allowed her opponent to narrow the gap. The Chinese girl geared up herself and levelled the score at 16-16 then she added five consecutive points in her total which turned final blow for her
rival who surrendered after reading 21-16 score on board.
However, Wang Lin could not carry this rhythm in next game and frittered away her effort of opening game.
Cheng Shao employed her experience and brilliance to establish a six-point lead in first half of the game. She kept her rival at lower end with 11-5 score on board.
After the break, Wang Lin created bit trouble when she pocketed some quick points and equaled the score at 16-16 but it was not enough to stop Taipei shuttler from clinching the crucial set with a decisive margin of 21-18.
This second set win boosted her confidence and Cheng Shao outclassed her challenger in every area of the game in the decider.
She controlled the bird right from the first shot and pushed her rival on the back foot with some powerful rallies in the opening part of the third set.
Cheng Shao placed a decent margin of 11-7 before the interval and continued dictating her opponent after the break as well. She earned six consecutive points in last moments and wrapped the show with a significant margin of 21-11.
Now the Taipei shuttler will test her skills against Li Xuerui of China in quarter-finals to escort her country to glory.
