Badminton Association of India and shuttlers appreciate the suspension of BWF’s skirt rule
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) and shuttlers have appreciated the suspension of the skirt rule that was introduced by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), which is the governing body for the sport in the world.
BWF introduced the new rule in the dress code that female shuttlers have to wear skirts while playing matches in all important tournaments. This rule received very harsh criticism from many shuttlers of various countries.
After this negative response, the BWF has announced the suspension of the decision until December, 2011, for further study. The decision was highly appreciated by Indian players and officials of the BAI, as it will eliminate all negative views of the players
for the BWF.
BAI vice president, TPS Puri, while speaking on the new decision said, “This is the right approach by the BWF. If it would have been made compulsory then many players would have become uncomfortable. A lot of nations, including India objected to the mandatory
nature of the ruling and we welcome this decision of the governing body.”
Mixed and Women’s Doubles shuttler of India, Jwala Gutta, also appreciated BWF’s move. Jwala said, “It is a very good decision by the BWF. They couldn't have gone ahead with the mandatory skirt ruling anyways. It can never be a compulsion on the players
and it is good that they are rethinking about the decision.”
India’s former player, Madhumita Bisht, expressed his opinion and said that the BWF delayed the decision on several occasions, which indicates that the governing body is working to find out a better step to promote the game.
Madhumita also said that the rule was against the norms of many countries and it received criticism from China, Indonesia, and India. Some European countries also criticised the skirt rule and suggested that it should not be made mandatory.
The decision of the BWF indicates that the governing body respects the religious and traditional norms of players and countries. The body will further study this rule and the final decision will be made in December, 2011.
