Badminton Association of Malaysia qualms over bad run of Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is disappointed with the bad performance of Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat, as the pair failed to perform well at the 2011 BWF World Championships, which ended in London, England, on Sunday, August 14.
The World Number Five pair of Tan Boon and Koo Kien is the top bet for Malaysia in the 2012 London Olympics as they are expected to be the only shuttlers to represent the country at the mega event. However, their quivering performance for the last 16 months
has made their position meagre when it comes to a big event.
Nadzmi Salleh, the president of BAM said that the Coaching and Training Committee (CTC) is expected to do something to get the pair out of their bad patch. Nadzmi said, “We discussed the performance of the doubles players in the World Championships and Rexy
too. Coaching is an important aspect in improving the players but we have not made any final decision and want the coaching and training committee to deliberate on the issue and come up with the best solution.”
He further added, “The CTC will be looking into the various aspects of what went wrong in the World Championships and to improve the training programme in order to help Kien Keat-Boon Heong win a medal in the Olympics.”
Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien brought a huge disappointment to BAM when they failed to pass the Men’s Doubles quarter-final round at the 2011 BWF World Championships by losing to the lower ranked Korean pair. They were the fourth seeds in the Men’s Doubles
draw of the Championship but they could not make their mark over the Korean shuttlers in their five previous meetings.
Ng Chin Chai, the secretary of BAM wants to change the whole set-up of training for the category of Men’s Doubles as the existing one has failed to produce desired results so far. No pair of Malaysia is able to cope up with the top shuttlers of the world
except Tan Boon and Koo Kien, and they should be in excellent condition if Malaysia wants to win the medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
