Badminton Association of Malaysia to launch new training programme at state level – Badminton News
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) looks focused to secure its future in badminton world as they announced to introduce new training programme at state level to polish the raw talent of country.
BAM development chairman David Wee confirmed the news and briefed that this will be an eight-year programme in which players will be picked from grass roots level to expand the existing talent pool.
National body is eyeing 2020 Olympics so only shuttlers of tender age will be selected for this national training setup.
David Wee unveiled the plan and told that current group of junior shuttlers will not be entertained in this programme rather they will be looking for new aspiring players and train them under local bodies’ setup.
He said, “The new programme will focus on talent identification and players as young as seven will be part of the programme where training will be conducted at the state level."
He also added that these shuttlers will not be sent to Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) as dozens of other future campaigners are already enrolled there.
Meanwhile, Wee told that Japan has been working under this strategy and now they are enjoying an elevated status in the arena.
He admitted that Doubles legend Park Joo Bong who is also chief coach of Japan suggested him to try this strategy.
He said, "I had a discussion with Joo Bong in Shanghai where he gave us his views based on the Japanese system where development and national team training are decentralised."
However, he made clear that they are not thinking to decentralise national training setup rather they are just trying to empower local bodies to ensure better training facilities for Malaysian lads.
David Wee announced that the association will provide sufficient funds to state level to help them in conducting local development projects.
He said, "BAM is also in the midst of allocating sufficient funding for the states to launch their own development programme on a bigger scale."
In recent past, two independent youngsters, Junior World champion Zulfadli Zulkifli and World Number 70 Misbun Ramdan Misbun, have made their impact and it will be interesting to see BAM stepping forward and do things on their own.
