Badminton Malaysia: Chan Peng Soon–Goh Liu Ying have done well, says Doubles head coach Tan Kim Her
Malaysia’s Doubles head coach, Tan Kim Her appreciated the performance of the national Mixed Doubles couple of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying by saying that they have done well in this category.
Peng Soon and Liu Ying have been playing remarkable badminton for the last couple of months and has become the first Malaysian couple to penetrate into the top 10 positions in the Mixed Doubles world standings. They have been placed on 9th position
in the world as they clinched the Mixed Doubles title in the 2011 Bitburger Open, which ended in Germany, on Sunday, November 6.
This was the second major title for the shuttlers as they have also won the title in the Asian Badminton Championships in the category of Mixed Doubles.
Their superb performance and elevated world ranking should be a motivation and inspiration to the lower ranked Malaysian couples, particularly Lai Pei Jin – Mohd Lufti Zaim Abdul Khalid and Sabrina Chong – Ong Jian Guo, who are participating in the SEA Games,
starting from today on November 12, in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Kim Her praised Peng Soon and Liu Ying for sacrificing the Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles categories and remained focused on the Mixed Doubles event, which has started to pay back to them.
Kim Her said, “Both sacrificed their men’s and women’s doubles events to give full attention to the mixed doubles. Not many are willing to make that sacrifice but they did and they are now reaping the reward.”
Peng Soon and Liu Ying are currently playing under the supervision of Jeremy Gan, and are doing very well. The head coach appreciated their dedication and commitment and also expressed his happiness as the couple has attained the ninth position in the world
standings.
He added, “This is a big boost for the mixed doubles department (currently under the charge of Jeremy Gan). We never had a mixed pair in the top 10 before. It should give Peng Soon and Liu Ying a lot of confidence going into next year’s London Olympic Games.”
The coach is optimistic that the lower ranked shuttlers will take inspiration from Peng Soon and Liu Ying and will perform well at international stage.
