Badminton World Federation says skirt rule aimed at drawing bigger crowds – Badminton news
Badminton World Federation has said that the skirt rule for female shuttlers for the whole world aims at drawing bigger crowds as they will look like stylish and aesthetic.
Paisan Rangsikitpho, deputy president of Badminton World Federation, revealed the purpose of the new skirt rule by saying that the governing body always intends to promote the game in the right direction. It respects the reservations and opinions of female
shuttlers and all concerned people in this regard.
The BWF has decided to go ahead with this rule which received severe criticism by numerous players and women organisations throughout the world. This new rule in dress code will be put into practice from June 1, 2011.
Paisan further added that this rule in dress code will differentiate women from male shuttlers in the court. He said that the BWF wants to promote the game throughout the world through pleasant presentation.
The Pakistan Badminton Federation refused to accept the rule as it affects the religious principles of the country. There are also many shuttlers who are not comfortable in their movement in the court by wearing skirts.
Indian women’s singles top seed, Saina Nehwal and women’s doubles leading shuttler, Jwala Gutta said that making this rule mandatory is wrong. She added that it was the right of the players to wear whatever they liked.
Paisan explained that women can wear shorts or trousers along with the skirt, which is mandatory for every female shuttler. He added that the skirts will be long enough to make the wearer comfortable in all aspects of the game.
This new rule is a hot issue which is under discussion in the whole world. However, the BWF made it clear that the new rule will take effect from June 1, and all female participants from all over the world will have to follow this rule in all super series
events which come under the direct supervision of the BWF.
