Badminton World Federation selects Wuhan as venue for the 2012 Thomas and Uber Cup – Badminton news
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has selected Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei, China, as the venue for the 2012 Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup. The decision was made after a bid, in which Jakarta of Indonesia was also under consideration. The event
will be held from May 20-27 and is the major team tournament before the 2012 London Olympics.
The BWF selected Wuhan on the basis of better facilities and the venue’s preparations for organising the event were also more than satisfactory, as it provides everything required for a good international tournament.
BWF Vice President, Paisan Rangsikitpho, after the announcement of the venue said, “Jakarta, Indonesia and Wuhan had bid for the host job and BWF chose Wuhan in considering its excellent preparations and the desire of prompting badminton in the city and
China.”
Secretary of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Ng Chin Chai said that in the Thomas and Uber Cup qualifying matches, Malaysia will play in the Asia Qualifying round which will take place in Macau, from February 14-19.
For securing the hosting status of the Thomas and Uber Cup, the deputy director of the provincial sports administration, Zhang Jin, expressed his happiness by saying that it will be an honour for the provincial capital, Wuhan, to host two big team event
championships.
In the entire history of the Thomas and Uber Cup which takes place once in every two years, China has maintained a clear dominance as the nation’s shuttlers have emerged as the winners against players from world over.
China is leading the points table of winning the Thomas Cup, as it won the event on eight occasions and female shuttlers of the country have won the Uber Cup six times. The victories of Chinese male and female shuttlers indicate that the country is truly
the biggest powerhouse of badminton, which always produces world-class shuttlers who possess every skill of badminton. With the recent domination of China at the 2011 BWF World Champions, it will be very difficult for other countries to give them a stiff challenge
in the future.
