Badminton latest; Saina Nehwal regains her second spot in the world
The professional badminton player Saina Nehwal of India regained her career high ranking of world number two after thirteen weeks in the latest Badminton World Federation rankings (BWF) on Saturday.
The 20-year-old Saina, who ended her 2010 Asian Games campaign without a medal in the quarterfinal round, has 63211.2637 points in the latest list released by the BWF.
Saina is the first woman from India to make her way into the quarterfinals in the singles event at the Olympics Games as well as the first Indian to triumph in the World Junior Badminton tournament.
The Hisar born, set her names in the annals of history during the month of June back in 2009 as the first Indian badminton player to triumph in a Super Series event by grabbing the Indonesia Open title after posting victory over Wang Lin of China in Jakarta. The Super Series competition is roughly comparable to a major event in tennis.
The Indian picked up her second career Super Series crown by lifting the Singapore Open trophy earlier this year in June. Nehwal also completed a hat-trick in the same season by grabbing the Indonesian Open a month later.
By virtue of this victory, Saina first rose to number three and subsequently number two in the world. However, her poor performances for the rest of the season resulted in her ranking dropping, but with her recent quarterfinal finish at the sixteenth edition of the Asian Games in China, the Indian badminton player has reclaimed her number two rankings.
The eighteen-year old Xin Wang of China is on the top spot of the Badminton World Federation ranking with a total of 66152.4017 points.
Yihan Wang, another professional badminton player from China, holds the third spot with ranking points of 62488.9106. The 22-year-old started playing the game of badminton at nine years of age. The right handed player was selected for the junior side on the very first occasion back in 2004. After being promoted to the senior team two years later, Wang, started to shine in major events.
