Badminton news: Lee Chong Wei enjoys sweet result in Mixed Doubles category at Selangor Open
The world’s best shuttler Lee Chong Wei, who is the real pride of Malaysia, proved that he has no parallel at local circuit as he surprised to all by winning the title, not in Men’s Singles, but in Mixed Doubles category at the Selangor Open in Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday, February 26.
The World Number One in Men’s Singles, Chong Wei, along with his partner Vivian Hoo put up a superb display of top quality badminton and won the title by beating Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon in the title match.
It was a straight-set contest where Chong Wei – Vivian Hoo showed the fearless play and overwhelmed their rivals Liu Ying and Peng Soon, who were the top seeds in the Mixed Doubles draw.
The World Number Nine Liu Ying and Peng Soon could not get rid of their opponents who had no pressure of playing in the final.
Chong Wei – Vivian Hoo enjoyed the match as they had no stress and tasted an unexpected but sweet victory.
The lower ranked Chong Wei – Vivian Hoo put up a wonderful show and thrashed their rivals in straight games with a 21-15 and 27-25 score on the board.
Chong Wei said that he used to play in the Mixed Doubles category when he was a junior player.
He also commented that Liu Ying and Peng Soon lost the match because they were the favourites and they could not handle the pressure of being the top seeds. However, he enjoyed this sweet result by playing in the Mixed Doubles category.
He said, "It's nice to win the title and it's not the singles after 10 straight years. I was 18 when I last won a junior mixed doubles title but this one was really surprising. Peng Soon-Liu Ying had to win but we didn't have any pressure and that actually helped us to win."
He further added, "I had long decided not to play singles to give the youngsters a chance and picked mixed doubles to offer support to the local circuit. Mixed doubles is easier to play compared to men's doubles and it really turned out to be a sweet end."
During this local tournament, Chong Wei also remained busy in his training at morning and participated in the matches at evening.
He is preparing to defend his title at the All England Open Premier Super Series, starting from March 6, in Birmingham, England.
