Badou Jack defies all odds to defend undefeated streak by nailing Alexander Brand – Boxing News
Badou Jack, the Swedish undefeated pugilist, created a huge upset and grabbed an emphatic close unanimous decision win over more experienced Alexander Brand, the WBC Latino super middleweight champion, in an eight-round bout held on Friday May 11, 2012.
The duo co-headlined this Friday’s Showtime weekly boxing show, Shobox: The New Generation and the ring for the showdown was set up at Texas Station Casino situated in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.
The event was headlined by the non-title 10-round epic bout between Yudel Jhonson and Willie Nelson which was unanimously won by Willie. Jack, 28, was seriously overshadowed in almost all the vital boxing aspects.
The young Swedish though was on an undefeated streak yet stood against a man who had not only more experience in his resume but also a title round his waist. Widely known as ‘The Ripper’, Jack has been in a total 10 bouts and is still undefeated.
On the other hand, his Friday night opponent, Alexander, was also on an undefeated win streak and boasted 16 wins in a total 17 bouts. Brand, the Colombian proud, has nailed 15 of his total opponents by knockout as compared to Jack’s eight knockout wins.
Apart from above, Jack has never taken on a man with this much experience and has never been a part of a title bout. Alexander, on the other hand, recently grabbed the WBC Latino super middleweight title from Gerardo Diaz and successfully defended it against
Luzimar Gonzaga.
A bird’s eye view clearly portrayed the fact that the odds are in favour of Alexander as he outclasses Jack in all the technical and brawling stats. But Jack literally did defy all these odds and collected a unanimous decision over a title holder.
Jack started things off in an authoritative manner and placed some very well targeted jabs securing much needed points but from the second round and onwards, Brand changed his brawling style altogether and moved in circles throughout the ring.
It was this movement which allowed him to connect left-right combinations especially when Jack withdrew his defence several times in order to cope up with Brand’s movements.
Jack seriously did found great difficulty in taking on Brand and later on, after the bout, admitted this fact, “[Brand] was awkward and he didn’t want to fight. I had to press him to get to him. I will do better next time.”
Two of the three judges allocated 77-75 in favour of Jack whereas one judge was convinced that Brand has won the bout and awarded 77-75 in his favour. With this win, Jack has strengthened his streak to 11 bouts and Brand has collected his first ever career
defeat.
