Question:

Bag Checks at Woolworths checkouts...?

Hi, just wondering if anyone can tell me how far a bag check can go. Bought clothes today from Big W then went to Woolies Supermarket for some groceries. On leaving the checkout an alarm went off and so the girl took all the clothes out of the bag, turned them inside out, went thru the pockets of clothing and found nothing. All this in front of a large crowd. I know they have a job to do but surely a supervisor could have been called and discreetly checked the items without holding up other customers. Please tell me what the policies are. Thanks Macka.

  1. They are invasive and wrong.   They can only go as far as you let them.

-- Say no and walk off. They want to call the police?  Tell them to go ahead.

  2. they arent allowed to do that.

i work at a supermarket and its against the law for them to touch your bag. they can ask you to go through the checkout again and if the alarm goes off then they have to call the supervisor who will check to see if the alarm goes off again and if so will probably take you into the back room and ask you if you have stolen anything. they may then search your bag and will check the security cameras. if you have been stealing then it isnt likely that they will call the cops, probably just ban you from the store.

i know this because i work at the checkout and have had experience with shoplifting and police

  3. don't know the policy's but thats terrible, if it happens again demand to see the manager or a supervisor.
