Bagpacking in Europe?

Question

I'm wanting to go bagpacking though Europe next summer but I don't know where. Also what are you tips for first time solo travellers and bagpackers?

Places I have been and liked are listed below (& listed are other cities I have heard  that are lots of fun from family,friends,etc.)

Barcelona, Spain

Madrid, Spain

Venice, Italy

Rome, Italy

Siena, Italy

Prague, Czech Republic

Ulm, Germany

Amsterdam, Netherlands

When you are there, try to look as least 'touristy' as you can. Thefts usually target people with suitcases and bags. If you are going to have a large backpack (I did), when you get on public transport in a any city, take your backpack off and put it where you can see it. Same in any train stations, airports. I have seen people eye-ing my bags and other peoples. also: you should make a photo copy of your passport and carry that along with you.

There are so many beautiful cities. I recommend getting from the library (or buying) a travel guide book of where ever you are going (lonely planet, rick steves, Fodor's) Those are really helpful and they give you certain tips on particular cities you are planning to visit.

I would do the big cities, like london, paris, madrid etc

depends what you're in to

if you like history, look up some great historical places in these countries

if you like walking and seeing the landscape, there are loads of areas you can go to.

oh and you can get some great volunteer opportunities in places like romania, like teaching english or other subjects.

learn the language of the country in that country (i used CESA)
