Bahrain GP chairman Zayed Alzayani blames Formula 1 teams for being temperamental – Formula 1
Bahrain Grand Prix chairman Zayed Alzayani has criticised the Formula 1 teams of being temperamental about the race decision from the World Motor Sports Council.
Zayed, while attending the Silverstone Grand Prix, talked to the media and stated that the Formula 1 teams came up with unusual reasons not to race in Bahrain after the decision was made to reinstate the race in October 2011.
He added that the Formula 1 teams stated that the Human Rights conditions in Bahrain were not good to race there whereas all the teams are happy to go to United States for the 2012 season, neglecting the infamous Guantanamo Bay.
“They [the teams] have been very temperamental. I feel disappointed because it cannot go within three months from one end of the spectrum, 'Oh, you are my favourite destination. We love it here. We feel like we are at home in Bahrain.' To the other, 'We
don't want to go to Bahrain.' Yes, events have happened in between but you can't be so temperamental,” commented Zayed.
He further added that although the conditions in the country were not normal to race at that time in March, the rescheduled date in October was perfectly fine as the conditions have changed rapidly over time.
Talking about Human Rights appeal from the teams, Zayed stated, “They're going to the US next year. What about Guantanamo? Isn't that human rights violation?”
He further added that Bernie Ecclestone stated that if Human Rights were to be seen before scheduling races, only Belgium and Switzerland would be on Formula 1 calendar for next season.
Bahrain GP was to be the season opener for the 2011 season but after the civil unrest in the region began to spread, the race was postponed.
Bahrain was then given a race date in October which was opposed by F1 teams due to security reasons.
Nevertheless, the 2011 season will not feature a Bahrain race and for the 2012 season, it will be once again the season opener in March.
