Bahrain GP decision to be revealed in a few hours says FIA spokesman – Formula 1 update
Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) officials have said that the final decision on the postponed Bahrain Grand Prix is expected in a few hours. The statement from officials said that Bahrain will update the committee first about the latest conditions
in the country and then the FIA will make its final decision.
The verdict on the future of the Bahrain Grand Prix was due on the 1st of May but the spokesman stated on Saturday that the final statement might hit the media on Monday evening. The officials of the FIA have now commented that the decision will
be taken ‘in an hour’. “The Bahrain government will let us know within this deadline whether they see the conditions [in which a race can be held] or they don't,” stated the official.
The Formula 1 Supremo, Bernie Ecclestone and Formula 1 teams are not on the same page about the Bahrain race. Bernie is looking forward to the race taking place and the teams are not so sure if they want to participate.
Initially, Bahrain was the season opener for the 2011 season and was going to be held on the 13th of March but was cancelled due to a sudden activist uprising. Soon after the cancellation, Bernie voiced that the Formula 1 world should visit Bahrain,
if the race is being rescheduled, to help the struggling nation.
The F1 teams and drivers voiced different views. The 2011 season has 19 scheduled races, out of which three are contested already. If Bahrain GP is reinstated, 2011 season will become the longest ever F1 year. So, the teams and officials said that the race
should not be reinstated and the nation should be given time to settle their, more important, political issues.
Bahraini officials, however, have said that they would welcome the Formula 1 world in the later part of the year when the conditions are stable. Bahrain International Circuit chairman, Zayed Rashid Alzayani, said, “We are not saying we are hosting it, we
are not saying we are not hosting it. We are not saying it is cancelled.”
Nevertheless, the official words from the FIA will hit the news in a couple of hours and rescheduled or not, Bahrain will present a challenge for Bernie Ecclestone in the future.
