Bahrain Grand Prix rescheduling decision postponed until June 2011 – Formula 1 news
According to the International Automobile Federation’s (FIA) recent announcement, the decision regarding the rescheduling of the 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix has been further postponed until June 3, 2011.
The FIA will then decide whether a Bahrain Grand Prix is possible or not, but since the current political situation of the country is not stable, it is not easy to give a verdict regarding this matter anytime before the new deadline.
The statement released by the FIA revealed that the organisers of the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) and Formula 1 Management discussed this matter before moving the deadline further and now, the decision will be announced on the date of the FIA World
Motor Sport Council meeting which will take place in Barcelona, Spain.
The FIA stated that they are hoping to consult the organisers of BIC before coming up with a decision regarding the rescheduling of the Bahrain Grand Prix as they can understand the situation in their country better than the FIA.
The Bahrain Grand Prix was initially planned as the season opening race of the 2011 Formula 1 season, but due to the current political situation and violent protests in the country, the race had to be cancelled. However, later on, it was revealed by the
FIA that the race can be rescheduled and held sometime around the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The country is currently in a state of emergency for three months but according to the organisers of the venue, the situation in the country is improving and they are hoping of bringing Formula 1 back to the country ‘in the near future.’ However, they did
not mention whether it would be possible in 2011 or not.
According to BIC chairman Zayed Rashid Alzayani, the FIA and Formula 1 managements have been very cooperative regarding this matter and he acknowledged their understanding.
“We gratefully acknowledge the understanding of Formula One Management and the FIA in what have been difficult times. We also thank the continued support of the international motorsport community and Formula One fans around the world,” he said.
He added that since the situation in the country is improving, day-to-day life is getting normal gradually as well.
“Bahrain's Grand Prix is a time of celebration and hosting the race is a source of great pride for Bahrain and Bahrainis. It is a showcase to the world and we look forward to welcoming the teams and drivers and everyone involved in Formula One back to Bahrain
in the very near future,” said Alzayani.
Formula 1 Management chief Bernie Ecclestone stated earlier that if the organisers of the venue believe that the race can take place this year and if there is a good chance, the deadline can be delayed further and it seems that is exactly what happened.
