Bahrain Invitational will go live despite political unrest in the country – Golf News
Despite bad political conditions in Bahrain, the organisers of the inaugural Bahrain Invitational golf tournament have decided to stage the event from April 13 to14, 2012.
Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) and the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) are the organisers of the event slated to start at the Royal Golf Club's Montgomerie Course.
According to the tournament officials, the government of Bahrain has assured the security, which will help in bringing the sporting figures to participate in the event.
"Golf in Bahrain has a long history going back to 1934,” A Bahrain Invitational spokesperson said. "We are looking forward to welcoming all the participants and safety around the event is assured".
Colin Montgomerie, Paul Casey, and Thomas Bjorn have already confirmed to participate in the event along with some other sporting stars like Tim Henman, Joe Montana and Gianluca Vialli.
According to Paul Casey, he is thrilled to return to the field where he registered a win in the Volvo Golf Champions last year.
He said that the Montgomerie Course is a perfect course to play on. Moreover, the people in Bahrain are always friendly and hospitable, which makes the venue more attractive.
"The pro-celeb tournament will undoubtedly be great fun for both the competitors and the spectators, and I am also looking forward to seeing more of the kingdom during my weekend visit," he said.
This year, the organisers of the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix have to cancel the event due to the violence between protesters and security forces in the country.
This year, the event is again caught into several issues as a number of F1 teams have shown their concerns over security.
The Pro-Celeb-Am golf tournament is scheduled exactly one week prior to the start of the Formula 1 Bahrain GP.
Therefore, it is a bold decision taken by the organizers to stage the event in such crucial times.
"We are continuing to build on the Formula 1 success, the recent Bahrain International Air Show and Bahrain Boat Show, and now the Bahrain Invitational,” Guy Kinnings, Global Co-managing Director of IMG, said.
Kinnings is expecting a number of players to join the field, making the event a huge success.
