Question:

Bailing out of Navy?

The question is as bold as the titles says. I remember my friend who also have sworn in saying that at the swear in ceremony one of the officials stated "if you ever have second thoughts and want to chose other career, the day of your shipment will be the last chance to bail without any consequences." I really need to know if this statement is correct, and I'll appreciate it very much if anyone can give me a sure answer.

I understand one should be responsible for signing contracts, so please don't post any comments dealing with that subject, thanks a lot.

  1. You are right. You are concidered in the DEP ( delayed entry program) until you leave for boot camp and sworn in. While in the DEP program you have the option to not go.

  2. Yes its correct..Until you are in boot camp you have every right to re-negotiate your contract and or back out of it..

There is no punishment for leaving the DEP..and you dont need a letter of permission or a reason. You simply tell them you no longer wish to ship..It happens every day in the military..

You need to not waste their time..Before you enlist figure out if its for you..DO NOT enlist with the attitude of "iill just back out later if i want" because your simply wasting your time as well as theirs..Dont sign till your certain you wish to do your entire contract..Plain and simple..

  3. Your not officially in the service untill the day take the oath.

  4. The official swearing-in occurs your first day at RTC Great Lakes (unless things have changed since I went).  Any that occur before that are just leverage (false though it may be).  People really shouldn't hold it against you if don't want to join, or have changed your mind.  Personally, I'd rather have people who want to be there, working with me.  Your recruiter will likely try all kind of tactics to keep you from dropping.

Used to be, I'd ask why, but joining the military is a life altering decision and should be your choice.  I'm getting out myself after 10.5 years (next month).  Good luck to you.
