http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Leighton-Baines-c21987, dedicated his goal against Newcastle United on Monday to all the sufferers of the Hillsborough tragedy.
The Merseyside outfit paid tribute to all those who lost their lives in the tragic stadium accident in 1989 before the start of the game, after an independent investigation panel revealed its findings last week over the cause of the incident.
A total of 96 http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 fans died in the terrace-stand of the Sheffield Stadium during an FA Cup match between the Reds and Nottingham Forest. An earlier inquiry report held some drunken fans as being responsible for setting off the stampede, clearing the
police and the authorities from the blame.
However, the latest publication from the panel has revealed that the fans were not at fault for the accident. Instead, it blamed the police for their criminal negligence and for tampering with facts to conceal their own misdoings.
Despite sharing a bitter rivalry with their neighbours, the Toffees defender dedicated his goal against the Magpies on Saturday to all the sufferers of the incident.
He stated that it was the least he could do for all the families which went through an emotional nightmare over the last 23 years, and hoped that their pain would ease now that the truth was finally out.
“I'd like to dedicate my goal to the Hillsborough families. But of course football as a game pales into insignificance when you are relating to what happened back then,” he told the reporters.
“What our club did before the game was a nice touch. Hopefully now people can move forward and hopefully they have gained some of the closure they have needed.”
The English International’s goal helped his side record a 2-2 draw. However, Baines was thoroughly disappointed over the result, as he felt that they deserved to emerge victorious out of the game.
“What is disappointing is Newcastle didn't do anything special, they didn't have any real play… It's disappointing we didn't and couldn't hang on when Victor scored,” he added.
The Goodison Park team have now got 7 points from their first 4 matches. They will next take on Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.
