http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749’s national squad for the upcoming Euro 2012.
The newly appointed England manager, Roy Hodgson named the 23-man contingent for the eagerly anticipated European Championship on Wednesday afternoon. The tournament will kick-off on 8th of June and will be co-hosted by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032.
England has been slated in Group D alongside England, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899.
Nevertheless Baines, who failed to secure a place in the England’s world cup team in 2010, was over the moon after hearing the news of his selection. The 27-year old is the only Evertonian to be picked up for the tournament. His team-mate http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Phil-Jagielka-c29902 has
been put on standby.
He told the club’s official website, “Obviously I'm really pleased. It's one of those things where you're hanging on waiting to get confirmation that you've had the nod.”
Baines revealed that he was not aware of his selection immediately after the squad was named on Wednesday, and that the news was conveyed to him by Jagielka via a text message.
The defender also took a sigh of relief over not having to wait anymore, and mentioned that he was now looking forward towards the competition.
He continued, “I suppose you can't help wondering, really. As I say, it's just nice for it to be settled now and be able to look forward rather than waiting on it.”
The Kirkby native has represented England in 6 games before. He made his professional debut for the Three Lions against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Switzerland-c3016 in June 2011. His last international appearance was in a friendly match against Holland in February.
Baines, who plays at the left-back position in Everton, was also sad over Jagielka’s omission from the squad. However, he pointed out that getting selected in the national squad is never easy, and felt that he was unlucky to have missed out on a place in
the grand event.
Baines remarked, “I think our manager [http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Moyes] said recently he's one of, if not the best English centre-half in the country - and I don't think many people would disagree with that. So he's probably a bit unfortunate not to make the cut.”
