  1. buy a spinning reel

  2. first of all set your speed and brake according to the weight of your lure. The way I do it is by working them until my lure gently goes down to the ground  under its own weight from about 6 feet. It should take no more or less than 10 seconds ( counting thousand-1 thousand-2 etc.)

Start with short casts, I'd say about 15 feet. when you cast try to keep your back and fore swing as smooth as possible. Use your thumb to control the spool as it pays out stopping the spool completely just as the lure hits the target. practice about 3 hours a week.

As far as back lashing goes, I started using baitcasters in the early 90s and I still backlash once in a while... just keep practicing.

  3. try to avoid casting into the wind and make sure you use ur thumb to stop the spool about half second before ur lure hits the water. your thumb is the most important part. if you get a small backlash just try to pull out the line till is good then rel is back on.

  4. Make sure the lure you are casting is heavy enough for a bait caster. Most baitcasters don't like to throw light weight baits...this is especially true with someone just learning to use a baitcaster. Try using lures in the half to three quarter ounce range until you get the feel for using your thumb to slow spool speed during the middle and towards the end of your cast. Once you get the feel of using your reel you will eventually be able to use lighter baits with less problems. Proper use of casting controls/magnetic brakes (if so equipped) is essential in addition to proper use of thumb to feather the spool and slow it mid-cast. Another problem many first time users have is from using too light weight of fishing line. 12 pound through 17 pound test is much easier to learn with (and pick out your backlashes). Like the other guy said....practice, practice, practice!

    Good fishing!
