Baki loses home match by 2-3 in the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Volleyball news
The first final game of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women took place on March 28. The city of Baku in Azerbaijan hosted the competition.
The two teams that made a show of their skills in the game both belonged to Azerbaijan. These were Baki as well as Lokomotiv. The venue of the match was the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex which has taken its name from the former President of the
country, Heydar Aliyev. A total of 4,000 spectators filled the hall to cheer for their favourite teams.
The match between the two Azeri sides took on exciting tones and went on to five thrilling sets that ended with the win going to Lokomotiv. The scoreboard showed the following final set scores when the match had reached its end: 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 15-25
and 15-13.
The player that was able to earn the title of being the top scorer of the match belonged to Lokomotiv. Nancy Jean Metcalf of the winning side kept the pressure on her opponents by scoring a total of 26 points in the entire match.
On the other hand, the most active player on the Baki side was Renata Colombo who made her presence felt by tallying 22 points in all.
The beginning of the opening frame of the game dictated the terms of the rest of the set as both Lokomotiv as well as Baki put up an impressive performance to keep the challenge up. The home team was able to take the lead early on but Lokomotiv kept chasing
behind and tipped the scales in their favour by taking hold of the advantage.
The home side did not lose hope and kept on the trail till they had re secured the lead once again. A similar pattern followed till the end of the set which saw the Lokomotiv squad grab the first win.
The Baki squad turned things in their favour by taking the third as well as the fourth sets and saving themselves a clean sweep. The final set of the match started off with much enthusiasm from both the sides and stayed competitive throughout. Both the teams
were determined to make a win however; it was Lokomotiv which finally got themselves the game by bagging the fifth set at 15-13.
