I've been working on this problem for a bajillion hours, yet it still continues to boggle me.

Also, what is H3BO3 called?

Thanks =)

  1. 5 NH3 + 3 HNO3 -> 4 N2 + 9 H2O

    I have no idea about the name for that compound though, sorry. :(

  2. Boric Acid or orthoboric.

    5 NH3 + 3 HNO3 = 4 N2 + 9 H2O

  3. This is a redox equation, so either you slug it out or break it into half rxns.  Nitrogen is oxidized from the -3 to 0 level by nitrogen in the +5 oxidation state which is reduced to the 0 level.

    To slug it out, you need enough Hydrogen to make the ratio to oxygen of 2 to 1.   So try

    5NH3 + 3HNO3->  4N2+ 9H2O

    H3BO3 (better as structure B(OH)3 ) is boric acid.
