Balboa Bay wins gold in 16 Open division USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships
Balboa Bay 16 Quiksilver was able to hand out a defeat to Huntington Beach Club 16-Adam on Tuesday, July 5th, to win the gold medal in the 16 Open division at the USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships. The championship match was taking
place at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Balboa Bay was able to churn up a competitive fight in the first set of the game and bagged it after a close match with Huntington Beach. However, Huntington seemed to have lost heart in the second set as they could not effectively step up their game and
lost to Balboa Bay in a clean sweep, 25-23 and 27-17.
The start of the first set of the game saw the 16th ranked HBC take the lead for at 8-3. However, Balboa Bay was not about to let their rivals go ahead with the advantage and were able to close in the gap by going on an impressive six point run.
Eventually, Balboa Bay was able to make the initial set reach a tie at 10-10. After this point, Balboa Bay came into full form and did not face any difficulty in pushing past HBC to take the lead at 17-15. HBC tried to break the momentum of Balboa Bay by taking
a time out. However, it did not turn out right for Huntington and rather than breaking Balboa Bay’s rhythm, HBC seemed to have lost their nerve which led them to commit unforced errors. This made it easier for Balboa Bay to take the leading position at 21-18.
HBC were not ready to give up just yet and brought the score close once again, but it was the Balboa Bay squad that finally bagged the opening set of the game at 25-23.
Winning the first set of the game seemd to give Balboa Bay confidence and they came out strong in the second set. The boys were able to assert their dominance early on without giving much of a chance to the opposition. Balboa Bay had the lead for themselves
at 10-5 and were able to maintain a distance of five points from their rivals for most part of the second set. HBC also helped Balboa Bay by making unnecessary attack errors. There was some hope as Michael Such of HBC, helped his team bring back the score
to 23-16. However, that was the most that HBC could do as Balboa Bay did not take long to win the final set at 25-17.
