Question:

Bald Faced Hornet nest on my lawn?

I want to mow my lawn, but the problem is that there is a part of my lawn under one of my trees. Under one of the branches, about 6 feet up on this tree is a bald faced hornet's nest. It is the size of a basketball. I don't want to disturb it, because I know they get rid of bad insect, but my lawn is getting out of hand under that part of the tree. Should I take the risk and try it, or destroy the nest?

  1. I wouldn't chance it.  Anything, even a noise or the vibration from your lawn mower can turn them into being very aggressive and coming after you.  Their sting hurts like heck too!  You could spray them at night, once they have all returned to their nest, but I don't think I would chance that either.  Seeing how they are very aggressive, why don't you call city hall and let them know about the nest.  They may even send someone out to remove it for you, or know of someone who will remove it safely.

  2. Hornets are very aggressive, have sentries out looking for intruders.  I would call someone and have them destroy it.  It is dangerous to you and anyone nearby. IMHO

  3. Don't be brave or honorable, sneak up on them at night and spray poison in the main entrance. Bald face hornets are VEE-SHUSH and will hurt you badly. Don't feel any guilt but don't take any daylight risks.
