http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Bale-c14422 scored on his return from injury as Tottenham Hotspur faced New York Red Bulls in a pre-season friendly last night. The North London club came from a 1-0 deficit and went on to lift the Barclays New York Cup.
The Tottenham winger showed no symptoms of the injury that had threatened to rule him out for the start of the Premier League.
The 23-year old Welshman was at the receiving end of a tackle courtesy of Liverpool’s Charlie Adam when both sides squared off in a pre-season game on Sunday. The tackle had left the player in crutches by the end of the game and he was quick to lash out
with a verbal assault on Adam, calling him a coward and criticising him for being reckless.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas was also not very happy with what had transpired. The Portuguese showed his disapproval of the ‘nasty’ tackle and publicly urged Adam to apologize to Bale for his actions.
Yesterday, it was learnt that Bale had escaped serious injury and won’t miss the start of the season after all. Villas-Boas was relieved and expressed his delight at the news yesterday in a press conference. The manager was even more delighted, when his
side came back from behind against New York Red Bulls and went on to lift the Barclays New York Cup.
Bale scored the equalizer that cancelled out Kenny Cooper’s first half penalty. The Welshman jumped to slot home a header from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s cross. Sigurdsson then extended Spurs’ lead five minutes later through a solo effort, curling the ball in the
top right corner from 16 yards out.
Villas-Boas expressed his delight at the result after the game and said:
“It was good and that’s mainly because of the response in the second half. We were a bit spread out on the pitch in the first half and they were playing in-between us. We came back very strong and managed to get the win that everyone deserved.”
“When you go into the dressing room 1-0 down and you are able to turn it around, showing strong character, that is always positive, because of the players’ mentality and determination to get the result. That’s a good sign.”
