Ball State men’s volleyball team sweeps Penn State at the Worthen Arena on Friday
The Ball State men’s volleyball team had cause to celebrate on Friday as they were able to make a clean sweep over the number nine ranking Penn State.
The match that took place at the Worthen Arena was a thrilling one. Despite the fact that Penn State lost it by a sweep, they did not go down without putting up a good fight.
When the first match of the 2011 Don Shondell/Active Ankle Challenge came to its close, the score board summarised the evening’s events by displaying the following set scores in favour of Ball State,  25-23, 25-21, 25-22.
The recent victory has improved the statistic of Ball State’s overall season wins to the figure of 18. In contrast to this, the number of times that Ball State has suffered losses so far total to be 10. If the overall season record of Penn State is looked
at, then it shows a better performance than that of its rival. Penn State has been able to register an impressive amount of 21 wins in this season so far. Their number of losses in this season is commendably low as well. They have had six defeats in all.
The opening set of the match saw the Cardinals take the lead at 5-4. Once they had secured a dominant position at the start, they were able to extend their lead and keep the advantage with themselves at 12-5.
Despite the fact the Nittany Lions were at a big deficit, they were able to step up their game and bring the score to a tie at 14-14. After another tie at 15-15 and a couple of errors made by Penn State, Ball State was able to march ahead. Once they had
the lead at this point of the game, they did not give it away until they had bagged the opening set of the game at 25-23.
The second set started off with a bit of a horn locking between the two teams but that resulted in the Nittany Lions taking the lead at 5-1. Once they had the lead, the Nittany Lions did not let go of it and were able to extend it at 12-6.
However, Ball State saw itself move up the scoreboard and tie the score at 14-14. From then on, the match went back and forth between the two teams and the spectators saw a time out as well. When the teams came back, Ball State was able to bag the second
set of the game at 25-21.
The third set of the match remained close all through with both the teams putting up a good fight. However, in the end the team that was able to prevail was Ball State who earned a win at 25-22.
Next in line for Ball State is a match against Saint Francis today.
