Question:

Ball park estimate for electrical work*?

Our house has an old Federal Pacific fuse box that we know is a fire hazard, and we need to have it replaced with something more modern/safe. We also have between 15-20 outlets in the house that we need to have grounded. Can anyone on the boards give us a ballpark estimate on what we'd be looking at for that kind of work? We're in South Carolina, if that helps at all. Thanks in advance!

  1. To change the circuit breaker panel will cost about $500 if you do not need a new meter base or wire on the outside.  If you do need a whole new service, the cost is about $800 for 100 amp and $1800 for 200 amp, depending on conditions.

If you need new wire installed to the receptacles, the labor will be quite high - at least $2000 if you have two stories.  If you only need to replace receptacles, and no new wire, I would estimate $20 each.

  2. In Florida, it would be between $1500-$2000.  The biggest cost is the new load center (fuse/breaker box), size of new breakers and the amout of time for rewiring of the load center.  All receptacles (outlets) are grounded, the difference being a two-prong or a three-prong receptacle.  A three prong one allows the appliance being used to be also grounded, whereas a two prong one does not.

  3. Well usually the hourly rate is between 65 to 75 dollars an hour. Changing out the panel shouldn't take but a few hours. The outlets on the other hand will take a while if the wires you have do not have a ground. If they do have a ground(hopefully) that should take no more then an hour and a half just to install the 20. I would say about a thousand and cheaper if you know somebody that knows what there doing. Hope this helps.
