  1. Heat bulbs are not the best heat sources for snakes. They can be used, but heat mats mats made speciafically for reptiles are better. The belly heat is better for them, and they do not suck the humidity out of the cage like heat bulbs do.

What type of bulb are you using now? Does it give off white light? If so, then you should get a different bulb for nighttime if you want to provide nighttime heat. Because there is a hot and cool side in your tank (there should be at least), it is okay to leave your heat source on all night long. You can get an infared bulb from your petstore, which will give off red light. That will still keep your temps correct, but your python will know it's night time, which is important since they are nocturnal. You can use the white light during the day, and the infared one for night time.

Or just get get a heat mat, and use it all the time; day and night, and ditch the bulbs all together. Use a digital thermometer with probe to check temps, to make sure they are not too warm. You don't want your snake to get burned.

  2. Ball pythons don't need supplemental light. If you need something for extra heat just get a reptile night light or better yet a ceramic heat emitter. The reptile night light will give off heat, and allow you to observe the snake, but won't disturb it.

  3. Black light is just a painted bulb (or colored glass). You can get them at most pet stores, and even places like wal-mart. You should use it during the evening, then switch to a regular bulb during the day.

You could also use a heat pad at night, and just switch the light off.

  4. That black light answer was just BS.  Ball pythons are nocturnal so you don't "need" a light at all other than the over-head one in the room. The black light would serve no purpose (black lights put off very little heat).

You're better off with an under tank heater than a heat lamp.

  5. black lights are c**p for that use
