i had one and he would not eat. i kept trying for about a month. nothing. so i took him back today. i got a new one... they fed him... i got him home and he strikes. the other one never would strike. why do they do that? how come one is calm and the other is mean? is there anything i can do to keep him but make him so he wont strike? I cant even get him out of this tank with out him striking. I went to give him water and he tried to strike at me? i know he is new and i should wait to hold him but i also have heard i should be taking him out a lil at a time the first day. I want him to be nice so i can keep him. i am at my wits end with the idea of owning a snake! experts or someone with true knowledge please! Is there something i should know? maybe he does not like women?

  1. Some pythons will fast for months, its not unhealthy if the snake looses no wight or body mass and should not be a problem big enough to return a ball python, it is simply a trait of the species.

On to the subject at hand.

Your new pet should be left alone for 1-2 weeks until he becomes acclimated. If you're gonna change his water of spot clean, avoid moving your fingers infront of his hide spot and clean during the day when he's hiding. If it gives you peace, use a glove (leather works wonders) to clean around. No, you should not handle him "a little at a time" on the first day, simply let him be.

Most pythons settle down on the first 7 days, though some may take longer. Show him your hand after the acclimation time is met, get him used slowly to your smell. When you think he is calm enough to handle, lift him gently by his middle, supporting his body with your hands/arms. If he tries to strike again, remain calm.

Some people have found that the first time, using a small towel to cover the python while you hold it until it calms down works too. Simply make sure you have given him the time to get used to his new home and THEN, try to handle him for minutes at a time, slowly increasing the time held.

  2. If you're going to own a snake, you're going to get bit at some time. Keep the one you have, you want snake that is a good eater. You're going to have to get it out and hold it every day so it gets use to you, it should only bite a few times until it realizes you're not food or a threat. As babies, their bite doesn't hurt that much at all.

  3. they all have different personalities.

cant pick and chooose spend time with them at the pet store before deciding if you want it or not.

  4. they have personalities too, u know.

  5. Well,if you can get him out and hold him without him striking at you while you hold him,he'll get used to you and shouldn't strike

But they do have different personalities,But i dout he will keep striking at you over time as he gets used to you.

    Good Luck
