Ball tampering claims against Doug Bracewell overshadow first Test – Cricket News Update
Unusual behaviour on part of New Zealand pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Doug-Bracewell-c1394 led to suspicions regarding ball tampering during the second day (July 26) of the Kiwi’s ongoing 1st Test against the West Indies, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound,
Antigua.
While cricketers have license to polish the ball during play, or wipe off dirt and grass from the surface or seam, Law 42 of the Laws of Cricket deems it an offence for players to indulge in any action which might prove detrimental to the ball’s condition.
Bracewell seemed to be in violation of the law during the early overs of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760’ first innings on day two of the Test, when video footage showed him pressing the ball against his thigh, and appearing to scratch at its surface with his right index
finger.
The action escaped Umpire http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marais-Erasmus-c74368, Reiffel requested the ball from Bracewell after 3.3 overs. However, the umpire did not appear to find any evidence
of alteration in the condition of the ball, and tossed it back to the Black Caps’ right-armer, who continued bowling.
Since match referee http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 squad or team management regarding the incident, no suggestions can be made about Bracewell’s involvement in ball tampering. A spokesman from the team also confirmed that
Madugalle had not contacted team manager Mike Sandle, in which case there was no issue.
The second day of the Test saw New Zealand losing the dominant stance they had attempted to establish on the first day of the Test. Starting day 2 at 232 for 4, the Kiwis’ batting order fell in a flurry of wickets, finishing their innings, all out, at 351.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KAJ-Roach-c1758 both claimed 2 wickets each.
The West Indies’ first innings saw http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kieran-Omar-Akeem-Powell-c71441 (58*) establishing a colossal unbeaten 145-run stand, while the Black Caps’ bowlers were unable to make any dents in their partnership. The third day of play is due to begin later today
at Antigua on July 27.
