Ballabriggs all set for John Smith's Grand National at Aintree
Trainer, Donald McCain is pretty confident that last year’s John Smith's Grand National champion, Ballabriggs, will be able to defend his title at Aintree, as world's biggest steeplechase takes place in April this year.
The 11-year-old veteran has been out of action since his historic win over the big fences in April 2011.
Despite not being the favourite for that contest, the Irish colt demonstrated an extraordinary show, sealing the top position by two and a quarter lengths.
After a long gap, the rampant gelding has just started his preparations for the big event. A few days ago, he was seen in action at Haydock, getting his leg warmed up for the major meeting.
His trainer, McCain (Junior) recalled the sweet memories of Ballabriggs’ brilliant victory in the Grand National last year, revealing that it was a very special occasion for him.
"It was very special. It meant a lot, but things have happened since that put it on another level," said McCain, who is the son of the undisputed legend of the National, Ginger.
He also shared:
"He's grand and we gave him a really long break after last year's race. We were supposed to give him a racecourse gallop at Bangor until it was called off, and he will now go for a gallop at Haydock this weekend. Then he goes to Kelso on March 3 for the
same chase he ran in last year. There's no reason to change things and it's purely to get him ready for the big day.”
So far in his career, Ballabriggs has seized seven wins, seven second, and a third position. His connections are determined to add another win to the tally, but it will be a tough competition at Aintree.
Synchronised is another high profile entry for John Smith's Grand National Chase, but his connections have not yet confirmed his participation in the mega event.
The nine-year-old is also due to run in the Cheltenham Festival, and his  trainer, Jonjo O'Neill described that the decision about Synchronised’s inclusion in the big race will be made after reviewing his Gold Cup performance.
