Question:

Ballet or Jazz?

I do latin ballroom and salsa. I also do bellydancing.

I want to start competing in latin ballroom and salsa, and I want to add either ballet or jazz to help with my latin dancing.

I would probably only dedicate 3-4 hours a week to it, as the rest of the time would be on latin dance (with another 3-4 hours dedicated to bellydancing)

I am leaning towards ballet, but what do you guys think would be better?

  1. if you want it to help with your ballroom dancing i would definately go for ballet. It will help better than jazz with things like turns and little details such as pointing your toes etc. Jazz would be good as a fun class to be a bit more laid back. But with 3-4 hours a week cant you do both? If you find a studio that has both and do two 1 hr classes of ballet, and two 1hr classes of jazz

  2. It all depends on what you think you'll be able to dedicate to.  If you don't like the jazz much, don't take it.  But Ballet will help you in flexibility and strengthening your muscles.

I personally like Jazz more than Ballet, but just by a little bit.

Anyways, I think it's pretty cool do to Latin Ballroom, Salsa (love it!), AND Bellydancing. I LOVE ballroom dancing.

Hope this helped and best of luck,

    Coolio Person :)

  3. ballet.

jazz is so optional, but ballet is a necessity if you want to actually KNOW dance.

  4. Ballet is the best way to go. It is the foundation of all technique! Believe me! It will improve your technique in latin ballroom and salsa. Jazz won't really help if you’re looking to improve technique.

    3-4 hours would be fine.

I have been a dancer for 13 years and only recently I started ballroom and my teacher said because I had ballet training I was able to adapt to ballroom every well. A friend of mine took up ballet a while ago to improve her ballroom and it worked!

Trust me; ballet is the way to go! =)

    Good Luck with your competitions!

  5. Ballet would help but jazz is more free. In ballet, it helps you strengthen ur muscles. In jazz it helps u be more free and relaxed.

Watch the movie Center Stage. The main character goes to a ballet acadamy and it one scene she becomes so stressed she goes to a random dance studo and takes a jazz class and she is more relaxed after that.

  6. Ballet is the foundation to all dance. Take my advice - take ballet.

  7. if you are looking for something fun a jump defenetly jazz, but if you want something calm and gracefull ballet. i think that ballet takes alot of strength it is harder than it looks. ballet takes lots of passion, and mussle.

  8. BALLET

ive been doing ballet and jazz for 10 years now

ballet helps with balance and posture (im sure you already have perfect posture anyway) besides its beautiful and classy. myself i dont know much about latin danceing but my friends who joined ballet found ballet more helpful then jazz/modern

  9. to me, i think you should take jazz just cause its more sassy then ballet and yeah.

you should do ballet for just a little though to strengthen ur muscles. it really helps.

  10. Ballet. It will help you with EVERYTHING.  Even about 3 hours would help you. It will help with your posture and will help strengthen your muscles first, then you take jazz to work on speed and stuff. But for now, ballet, it will help! =]
