Question:

Ballpark window estimate?

I have been looking all over the net for hours now to find a price for slider/sliding/glider windows. It seems no one can decide what to officially call them. I need the price for a 70'' x 30" rough opening. I know I should just wait and go ask at Lowe's or Home Depot tomorrow, but I would like to have an idea of what a good price would be before I go.

  1. The term is most commonly "horizontal slider"

Typically they(Lowes-HD) don`t carry them in stock.

Given your RO, the size is`nt quite in keeping with a normal "stock"size. you may have to do a little work on it before installing the new unit.

As far as price goes it really depends on the composition you desire in the new unit. A ballpark? $200-$500

  2. You should be able to buy a good 70" wide x 30" tall sliding window for less than $400.  This would be a 3 lite slider -- an operating lite on each side 1/4 of the width with a fixed lite in the middle 1/2 the width.

On the off chance that you mean 30" wide by 70" tall, you should get by a bit cheaper -- less than $300 for a good window, only 2 lites this time.

These prices will cover the window only -- expect installation to be more, varies considerably by market.  In some areas you might get a cheap window installed for these prices, but given the size you should look for something that is built well.

Sliders are awful.  The bottom track always collects just enough dirt and crud to make them hard to move over a period of time.  The sashes flex just enough to make it hard to seal them where the panels come together.  I have some otherwise good vinyl sliders in my house now, they are going to go as soon as I am able to rob Peter of enough to pay Paul for new windows.

If you are looking for a 70" wide x 30" tall window, there aren't many good options, perhaps a couple of casements with a picture unit in the middle.  If you are looking for 30" wide x 70" tall, the slider will certainly be trouble, you should think about a double hung instead.

  3. $50 to $120.  But  you can go as high as $500 depending on your style.  The best quality I would say is Kolby & Kolby Windows and it should not be more than $100.
