Can anyone give me a list (or direct me to an informative website) of the names (descriptions would be helpful) of the "dances" or "dance steps" that people would do in the 1960's

I am NOT talking about Teen rock'n roll dances like the twist, Jerk, etc... I'm talking about a VERY formal setting, such as a debutante ball, or a black tie gala.. the setting is EXTREMELY wealthy people, NOT teens dancing to rock'n roll

So, if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it..

  1. foxtrot quikstep waltz tango....

  2. Ballroom dancing was not particularly popular in the 1960s, it was in fact on the decline. This was a time of personal expression and political unrest. And yes, this was the time when The Twist emerged - the first partner dance where two people  didn't touch each other. During this era, in China, ballroom dancing was banned as a "manifestation of bourgeois decadence." Swing dance clubs emerged. The West Coast Swing was considered too s**y for some places. Despite not being particularly popular in the 60s, of course ballroom persisted.

This link will give you information on each of the ballroom dances, including some of the steps and music samplings.

  3. Here is a list of ballroom dances that are likely to be of that era, but you will have to do more research in order to find out when every particular dance became popular. wikipedia.org has a good article on each.

    Peabody

    Waltz

    Swing

    Cha Cha Cha
