Ballymac William lands gold in the Coral Greyhound Olympic
Ballymac Willam (evens favourite) completed the 515m track at Hove on Thursday night to claim gold in the final of the £5,000 Coral Greyhound Olympic.
Trainer Nick Savva’s Westmead Grant was withdrawn from the final after going lame resulting in trap six being vacant which by any measure did not make it easier for William to cash in the prize.
The Carly Philpott trained charge made a trap two start and was baulked across the first bend but managed to keep the setback minimal taking the lead shortly once again and clocking 29.92sec to beat Boolavogue by almost two lengths.
Philpott is no stranger to big-race success, she said in the Racing Post: “He’s a really good dog and I wouldn’t swap him for anything else right now.
“I’ve yet to discuss plans with either Miles Anderton or Steve Murphy, but there’s a definite possibility that he may return to Hove for the Sussex Cup. He likes a gallop. The Select Stakes is another option along with the Irish Derby.”
Seamus Cahill’s Lethal Freds (6-1) produced the fastest early break but took a really bad bump and was disqualified after falling.
Whilst Barrie Draper’s Farley Blitz (6-4) failed to produce the start required to have a shot at being crowned the new champion. The early problems were too much for this charge and resulted in him never looking threatening through the race to only finish fourth.
