‘Baltimore Batman’ gets jail time after interfering Baltimore Orioles, Ravens games- MLB News
Mark Harvey had his two little stints of running on to the Camden Yards and M&T Stadium during the games and now will be serving a short time in jail for the adventures. He will be behind the slammer for around a weekend, will pay a $400 fine and will perform
80 hours of community service. To add up to that, he has been banned from the Orioles Park and the M&T Stadium for life.
Mark, dubbed as the Baltimore Batman by some, had run on the field during an Orioles home game. It was one of his to do list after his birthday incidentally was on the same day as the Orioles kicked off their campaign. He was arrested but after some confusion,
charges were not filed against the lifelong Maryland resident.
He later decided to do it again, this time with a cause of creating awareness against bullying. He was clad in batman short and had a message written no his chest ‘don’t be a bully, be a super hero’. His antics did not go well with either of the two ball
park managements or the prosecutor though.
The State Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein did not see the funny side of it.
"The defendant's conduct is no laughing matter. Jumping out of the stands and onto the playing field risks the safety of fans, athletes, and the many others who work at these facilities," Gregg said.
The 26-year-old trucker accepted that he was at fault and knew there could be consequences for his acts.
"What I did was wrong and I did break the law so I knew there was going to be consequences," he said. "They wanted to definitely … make an example of me so that nobody else runs on the field."
He was charged with two counts of disorderly conduct and trespassing. The prosecution argued that he had put himself and others in harms way and wanted Mark to have a longer sentence. The charges could have had him in the joint for up to six months.
Harvey’s attorney told the court that he was working against bullying and was raising money for the cause. Judge Cogan saw the intentions were right but the act was wrong.
“The problem is the only reason that happened is because he broke the law,” Judge Cogan said. “It sends a mixed message to kids. The message is positive, but you committed a crime.”
Mark will be spending the holidays at home and will report to jail on January 4 for his short term. He has already learnt his lesson and has declared that his days as batman have come to an end.
“I’ll tell you what, it’s the end of Batman,” Harvey said.
One hopes that others will refrain from such acts in future and if they feel like promoting a cause, they will do it without putting themselves and others in harm’s way.
