Baltimore Orioles’ Adam Jones rings the NYSE closing bell - MLB News
After posting his best season in Major League Baseball, the Baltimore Orioles’ Adam Jones rang his first closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
Jones was accompanied by the executives from Rawlings, the company that sponsors the Gold Glove Award for Major League players for excellence in fielding skills.
"This is really part of history, being here to ring the bell," said Jim Lillie, CEO of the Jarden Corporation, which is a subsidiary of the Rawlings. Jones is one of the three Orioles’ players to receive the award this year, along with J.J. Hardy and Matt
Wieters.
Adam was in the big apple to receive his Gold Glove Award. This was a second for the centre fielder.
"Just to get the second one means the first one wasn't a fluke," he said. The 27-year-old also expressed his delight on his ball team winning multiple awards this year.
"For any team to get multiple, you've got to play well," he said. "We've been trying to just play the game.”
He was delighted that the team improved as a unit and the awards were truly a tribute to the coaches and their efforts, which were a major factor behind the success. The Orioles, who were the surprise package of the 2012 season, were the only team to win
three awards this year.
The centre fielder had a tremendous year with the glove. He made 439 put-outs, seven assists, along with committing eight errors and a fielding percentage of .982. His year with the bat was also a delight. In 648 at-bats, the right-hander hit 82 RBI’s and
32 home-runs. Both his batting average of .287 and on-base percentage of .334 were better than his career numbers.
Jones emphasised that his team wanted to play a competitive game and did so from Spring Training to all the way into the final game of the post-season. He believed that the team gave its all in every single game in the season and post-season and none of
the players had any regrets.
He also reflected upon the experience of being on the floor of the stock exchange.
"The stock market is cool," Adam said. He did not find the first hand experience to be much different from what he has seen on the television and in the movies. "You see it on TV and in movies, guys running back and forth trading, but you come here and there's
a lot of trading going on,” Jones said.
The awards were given out on Friday night at the Plaza Hotel the trophy was a heavy one, weighing 56 pounds. Despite the heavy nature of the prize, none of the recipients were complaining. The winners certainly deserve all the praise and accolades that are
being showered on them.
