Baltimore Orioles’ Alfredo Simon gets positive news from Lawyer
The Baltimore Orioles recently made the headlines, when they acquired Derrek Lee off the free agency on a one-year deal. The signing came with the inkling that Luke Scott was going to be a fundamental part of the club. With the two players in the roster,
the Orioles had packed a good line of hitters for 2011. However, what the management of the O’s never expected was one of their players getting a murder conviction in the Dominican Republic.
The O’s relief pitcher, Alfredo Simon was recently charged by the police in the Dominican Republic for murdering a 25-year-old man, Michael Esteban Castillo Almonte. The player was further accused of shooting the deceased’s 17-year-old brother as well. Now
with one man dead and the other severely injured, Baltimore face the possibility of losing one of their rising players. Simon, 29, will face a charge of involuntary manslaughter when the case will be brought before a judge.
There have been developments in the story, and the latest facts to come out point at the two victims being the player’s cousins. Furthermore, Alfredo told CNN that the incident was an accident. There isn’t clear information out on the incident, but the relief
pitcher’s lawyer Carlos Olivares believes his client is innocent.
Reports coming in today indicate that the lawyer has stressed the player’s innocence based on the preliminary forensics report on the weapon used in the killing. The document in the lawyer’s opinion, absolves Alfredo from conviction on the New Year’s Eve
shooting incident. Carlos Olivares told CNN, "The ballistics tests have been favourable. We are waiting for the formal report."
Alfredo is under custody in Santiago, and is set to face trial in the coming weeks. Nevertheless, his lawyer maintains the ball star had no knowledge of the murder util he left the park, where the incident took place on New Year’s Eve.
"He understood that nothing had happened at the moment. And 45 minutes later, when he was eating at some restaurant or discotheque, somebody tells him, 'Hey, you're the one, who killed so-and-so’,'" Olivares said. "The fact is that in this incident many
people fired guns, but the only person who's been summoned for this is my client."
