Baltimore Orioles’ Buck Showalter is American League Manager of the Year - MLB News
The Baltimore Orioles of 2012 are truly inspirational. A team that had been down and out for a good decade and a half turned it around like true champions. The genius behind this amazing transformation which saw 93 defeats in the previous season to be changed
into 93 wins in the regular season this year was none other than the O’s Manager Buck Showalter.
This is now being recognised by everyone. On October 24, he was awarded with the Sports News’ 2012 American League Manager of the Year. This was his third Sports News AL Manager of the Year Award.
Showalter had previously won in 1994 for the New York Yankees and shared the Sporting News Manager of the Year Award with Ron Gardenhire in 2004 as the manager of Texas Rangers. The 56-year-old is also a favourite for the prestigious Manager of the Year
Award, which will be presented by the Baseball Writers Association of America in the second week of November. He has won the award twice on previous occasions.
The Orioles’ Manager mentioned that it was a team effort that got his team this far.
"It's quite an honor coming from my peers, but I view this as a team award. I really do," Showalter said. "The players, coaches and everyone involved made this possible.”
The manager received four votes out of the 17 by American League Managers. Bob Melvin of Oakland Athletics was in second place with three votes. The National League Manager of the Year went to Davey Johnson, Washington Nationals’ Manager. Davey Johnson was
the last Orioles’ Manager before Buck to win the Manager of the Year in 1997.
Showalter was happy with the team being able to perform in adverse conditions and being able to pull things back. “We have some injuries along the way, we had some bumps in the road, but everyone does over 162 games. We never turned it into a woe-is-me situation.
We played through it,” He said.
The Baltimore Orioles resurgence in 2012 has given the organisations and its fans a lot of hope for the future. Under the management of Buck Showalter, the team has shown a lot of poise and promise. What everyone now is looking forward to is a consistent
show from this team that has mesmerised one and all this summer. This may not be an easy task but Buck and his boys look all set to take this challenge head on.
It will be interesting to see what changes the Orioles come up with during the offseason to prepare for Spring Training. The team had a good 2012 season and they will be looking to carry this momentum forward in to the next session.
