Baltimore Orioles accomplish second three game series sweep in 2011 - MLB Update
Game 1: Baltimore Orioles 7 – Seattle Mariners 6
Baltimore Orioles defeated the Seattle Mariners 7-6 in a thirteen innings long game at the Oriole Park on Tuesday night, May 10.
The Mariners achieved an early lead in the second inning with the help of a homer posted by the Adam Kennedy off the Orioles’ top starter, Jake Arrieta. However, Jake made a strong come-back, held the opposition scoreless in his next five innings and finished
his spell, allowing just two runs on four hits, three walks and taking six batters over six innings.
On the other hand, James Jerry Hardy shortened the two run lead by hammering a 376-feet homer in the third inning. In the sixth, Adam Jones scored an RBI double to take a 3-2 lead.
The game then kept on stumbling on either side and at last tied in the bottom of the ninth inning. After this inning, the pitchers struck back and held the batters scoreless until the top of the thirteenth inning, when Mike Wilson earned a leading RBI single
off the Orioles’ closer Jeremy Accardo. Except this run, he did not yield any further runs and finished his two innings.
However, in the bottom of the innings, Felix Pie scored a tying RBI single and Matt Wieters added a leading RBI single to earn his club first game of the three-game series.
Game 2: Baltimore Orioles 4 – Seattle Marines 2
The Orioles’ confidence has risen after the first victory, as they easily captured the second game 4-2 in front of a large crowd, present at the venue.
The Orioles’ starter, Chris Tillman, tossed an impressive six innings spell, gave just one run on three hits, allowed three walks and managed five strike-outs to cement the Orioles second-straight win over the Mariners.
Despite Chone Figgins providing an early lead to the Mariners, starter Felix Hernandez, could not defend it and gave away an early run in the bottom of the third. He then gave three more runs an RBI single to Luke Scott and an RBI double to Adam Jones providing
the Orioles with a 4-1 lead.
The Mariners’ Michael Saunders launched a one-run homer in seventh inning in an attempt to remove the lead, but he did not receive support from other batters and the club lost 4-2.
Game 3: Baltimore Orioles 2 – Seattle Mariners 1
Both starters performed brilliantly and pitched a shut-out nine innings each, however the Orioles’ James Jerry Hardy scored an RBI double to take his club to a 2-1 win and second series sweep this season.
The Orioles’ starter, Zach Britton pitched a scoreless nine innings, gave just three hits and managed five strike-outs to earn his fifth win of the season. While the Mariners’ starter, Jason Vargas, gave seven scoreless hits, one walk and managed four strike-outs,
but remained winless for second time in this season.
In the twelfth inning, Miguel Olivo hit an RBI leading single providing the Mariners a hope to shatter a two games losing streak and avoid a series sweep, but Hardy splintered their hopes hitting an RBI leading single in the bottom of the inning.
